A few months ago, I attended a party at my friend's place. I met many known and unknown people at the party. Everyone was enjoying themselves. People were dancing, drinking, talking, singing, playing etc. Few of them were colleagues, so they were, as usual, discussing their agendas. So, the party was organized by my friend in honour of his son who won an award. Some of his colleagues were wishing him, some were upset, some were jealous. But everyone was there to wish him despite how they feel about it. I realized people are not happy from inside or hiding their emotions. They are discussing office work at the party. We are all trying hard to balance our personal and professional life. With personal life, it depends on how we handle our relationships with family and friends. With professional life, things are a little easy because of automated processes and optimized schedules to an extent. But we tend to forget about mental health. Today the competition is very high and everyone is struggling to win but end up losing mental peace.
But are these enough to take care of in our life? What about our health? What about maintaining a balance in the health sector of life between mental and physical health? If something affects our health, all the other activities get affected.
Importance of Mental health: Mental and physical health are equally important for overall health. Mental illness, especially depression, increases the risk for many physical health problems, particularly stable conditions like stroke, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Similarly, the presence of chronic conditions can increase the risk for mental illness. It impacts how one thinks, feels and acts.
Prevention: A mental disorder can quickly spiral out of control and destroy entire lives. Also, many mental illnesses are difficult or impossible to treat, so it is crucial to prevent mental disorders. A WHO report states that it is possible to avoid mental disorders by addressing work, housing, childcare, and education. There are many things that may be out of our control, but there is much that we as individuals can also do to maintain good mental health and keep disease at bay:
1. Keep good physical health: There are enough proofs available to believe that exercise can keep mental illness away, and eating healthy is good for the body as well as good for the mind.
2. Challenge your brain: Pick up a challenging hobby like learning a new skill, solving puzzles etc., to keep your mind engaged and keep alive your problem-solving abilities.
3. Learn anger management: Anger can be harmful to health and your relationships. Learning effective anger management strategies to mitigate the consequence of damaging emotional outbreak.
4. Control and lower stress: Stress is harmful for health; it contributes to heart disease and hypertension and increases the risk of stroke, obesity and diabetes. It is not good for your well being either, so prioritize, delegate and make the necessary changes in life to lower stress.
Conclusion: We all are working like machines to match the pace of this competitive world. Sometimes failure brings emotional trauma, and we fall sick mentally. Mental wellness is equally important as physical wellness, because it will affect professional and personal life if a person is not mentally well. By following these steps, one can prevent himself from mental issues.
